Module evaluation

The evaluations of courses and modules are a basis for optimizing teaching and therefore in the interest of the students. To this end, as many students as possible should take part in the surveys. Measures derived from surveys to optimize teaching should be communicated to students. This can also help to motivate students to take part in the surveys.

The module evaluation serves to record course-related aspects. This includes the coordination of content within a module, the recording of student workload and the achievement of module objectives. Before an organizational unit decides on a survey method, it should first seek advice from the ZEM, taking into account the objectives, target group, survey content and complexity of the survey. Which method an organizational unit chooses depends on several factors.

Module evaluation based on online surveys

For modularized degree programmes, the ZEM offers an online-supported coupled course and module evaluation. Modules and associated courses are registered centrally in the organizational unit for evaluation. Before an organizational unit can participate in this procedure, an exchange of information between the ZEM and the evaluation officer is required. It is possible to adapt the system to the circumstances of the degree program in advance by changing the registration system and the questionnaire. This is done in cooperation with the evaluation officer or a person/group appointed by him/her. The contact person for the implementation of the procedure in the individual organizational units is the respective evaluation officer.

Central registration of modules and courses takes place in a database-based system. For example, module objectives only need to be entered once and remain saved. To re-evaluate a module that has already been entered, for example in the following year, it is activated by the person registering centrally and only certain information, such as semester, student contact or survey period, needs to be entered again. In addition, the questions and input options are also controlled via the database on the basis of subject-specific agreements, so that certain questions are displayed for each organizational unit or depending on the type of course.
Teachers can also be given the opportunity to add their own questions at course level and to formulate detailed objectives analogous to the respective module objectives.

The survey period can be freely selected for each module. In the case of modules that extend over several semesters, the individual courses can be assessed immediately after they have been completed; the module assessment only takes place after the module has been completed. The prerequisite for this is that the module, including all courses, is entered in the database with the corresponding semester details.

Module evaluation on the basis of paper-based surveys

It is possible to evaluate modules using paper-based surveys, but this is not always advisable to have the surveys filled out in a course.
